NTT Com Develops Secure Access System with Human Area Networking Technology

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) announced today that together with Hitachi, Ltd. and MIWA LOCK Co., Ltd. it has developed a new human-identification system using RedTacton, a Human Area Networking technology developed by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation that uses the surface of the human body as a safe, high-speed network transmission path.

RedTacton uses a transmission path established between the body of a person carrying a RedTacton card key and a RedTacton transceiver installed in, for example, a doorknob or floor.
The person is automatically identified when they touch the doorknob or walk on the floor, and the transmission path is disconnected when the body and transceiver physically separate.

Security demands are increasing in virtually every industry of Japan after passage of compliance legislation similar to the U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Companies have also been seeking less obtrusive systems for secure access, since conventional systems require a contactless IC card to be waved over a terminal.

RedTacton enables a defined spot to serve as the point of identification, whereas wireless and infrared communication require wider areas. Identification points can be installed along the main areas of movement within a building, thereby enabling repeated identification of people as they enter a secure area, move about it and then exit. RedTacton is also highly scalable for systems incorporating flapper gates, finger-vein authentication devices, immersion-detection sensors or safety equipment.

NTT Com designed and constructed the system and manufactured the RedTacton card key and reader. Hitachi designed the access management system and manufactured related management and control devices. MIWA LOCK designed and manufactured the RedTacton-equipped doorknob.

NTT Com will now begin promoting the new system for use by research facilities, data centers and factories that require high security or cleanliness. Hitachi will demonstrate the system at Security Show 2009, which will take place at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition complex from March 3 to 6.

NTT Com to Launch Data Center & e-VLAN POP in Shanghai

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) announced today that it has agreed with China Telecom Shanghai, a subsidiary of China Telecom Group, one of the nation’s biggest fixed and mobile phone operators, to launch the Yuanqu Data Center in Shanghai on February 2.

NTT Com also announced that the data center will introduce Global e-VLAN point of presence (POP) to provide international wide-area Ethernet service on February 2. Customers will be able to connect their servers and systems to a high-speed backbone network directly on the premises of the data center, thereby minimizing connection costs.

Data centers are a key way that NTT Com supports secure, stable, optimized operations of corporate customers on a worldwide basis. NTT Com data centers in 27 cities of Asia-Pacific, North and South America and Europe place a special emphasis on providing globally consistent solutions for multinational customers.

The rapid increase of global companies operating in China has raised the demand for high-quality, high-reliability data centers offering seamless connection to international wide-area networks, such as the new Yuanqu Data Center. The facility will provide co-location, managed operation (monitoring, maintenance, security, etc.) and network, including NTT Com’s Arcstar Global IP-VPN and Global e-VLAN services. Shanghai NTT Telecommunications Engineering Co., Ltd will provide customer support in Japanese, Chinese and English on a 24/7 basis.

The data center will also use multiple carriers to provide backup connection and Internet access.

NTT Com to Test IPv6 System for Secure Remote Assistance
NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) announced today it will begin field testing its IPv6-compatible Secure Remote Assistance System at the Support Center of Yamada Denki Co., Ltd., a major consumer electronics retailer, from January 17 to March 1.

The Support Center will remotely assist users in configuring their PCs for IPv6 and using related applications, with the results to be used in both evaluating and confirming the system’s technical and operational viability. The test will comprise 1,000 monitors who purchase PCs from Yamada Denki and sign up for support service. Dedicated software will be installed on the users’ PCs to enable the service.

IPv6, the next-generation Internet protocol with a massive capacity for new addresses, will enable PCs and a broad variety of other devices to connect ubiquitously to the Internet. Switching from the conventional IPv4 protocol to IPv6 requires, however, new methods for configuring devices and preventing viruses and information leaks, procedures that are generally beyond the abilities of typical Internet users. NTT Com’s Secure Remote Assistance System will solve these problems on the network side, thereby alleviating users of the burden.

The system provides quick, secure and safe remote assistance via a dedicated application capable of “machine to machine” (m2m-x) support for end-to-end communication management based on the IPSec security and SIP IP telephony protocols. The use of m2m-x enables real-time bidirectional communication with networked PCs and other terminals, including household appliances and control devices, in a safe, simple, and low-cost manner. Authentication and encryption of the communication channel ensures remote access only with trusted users.

The Secure Remote Assistance System also features a Diagnostic Code function based on OPTiM Corporation’s Optimal Code technology, which enables the center to remotely and securely diagnose a customer’s PC using Japanese hiragana or alphanumeric encoding.

The system is compatible with IPv4 and works with NTT Com’s commercial IPv6 Internet access service, which uses tunneling technology to encapsulate IPv6 packets inside IPv4 packets for easy deployment of an IPv6 environment within an existing IPv4 environment.

NTT Com developed its Secure Remote Assistance System under a government-sponsored national research project that the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is conducting to promote secure, ubiquitous connectivity within the emerging IPv6 environment. After reporting the results of its field test to the ministry, NTT Com will consider commercialization of a service based on the Secure Remote Assistance System.

CLASS 465 TRAINS WITH NEW HITACHI TRACTION DRIVE HANDED BACK TO SOUTHEASTERN AS SCHEDULED

Hitachi Europe Rail Group today announced that the first Class 465 unit with Hitachi traction technology have been handed back to Southeastern on schedule and this prototype unit will start revenue service today.

Hitachi was contracted to replace the traction equipment on the 465/0 and 465/1 Networker units. The project is on schedule. Starting in April 2009, the modification of the full fleet will commence at Ashford lasting until April 2010.

The replacement traction system has to seamlessly fit into the existing vehicles and will improve the traction reliability of the units by a factor of 10. To achieve this, Hitachi utilised the latest traction technology coupled with specific design considerations aimed at equalling or bettering train safety, train performance, route availability, and operational flexibility of the units.

The main driver behind the contract was to improve reliability of the units and the Hitachi design focused on removing components out of the existing design that were perceived as a risk to reliability. The replacement traction system is designed to enable the train to work to schedule even if one out of the four traction inverters on a unit were to fail.

Alistair Dormer, General Manager at Hitachi Europe Rail Group said: “When we accepted the order to integrate our traction system in the existing Class 465 Networker trains, we also accepted the challenge to prove that our leading edge technology could be fitted into older rolling stock. We have fully mastered this challenge and seeing our first train go into service today is proof of that. In addition, we have completed the work on the contracted delivery date and are proud that this means uninterrupted service for both the train operator and travellers. Our commitment to the UK rail industry is as strong as ever and I am very pleased that by working effectively in partnership with HSBC Rail and Southeastern we have achieved this important milestone on time.”

Hitachi to Take Part in Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Joint Evaluation in the U.K. with CPI and Hitachi High-Technologies

The Centre for Process Innovation Ltd. (“CPI”), Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT / TSE:6501, “Hitachi”) and Hitachi High-Technologies Corporation (TSE:8036, “Hitachi High-Technologies”) have agreed to begin a joint evaluation aimed at developing applications for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) and creating a viable business in the U.K. Specifically, the three companies will jointly conduct field studies to assess the power generation performance and economic efficiency of various applications, which will be developed by CPI and powered by Hitachi’s prototype 100 W-class portable DMFCs, including remote surveillance cameras and highway signage. The results of these trials will be used to select applications suited to DMFCs for the U.K. and assess the feasibility of a fuel cell business in the U.K.

CPI develops innovative technology within the process industries. It is a company limited by guarantee and was established by One North East, the Regional Development Agency for North East England. The U.K. government is actively promoting the adoption of new energy sources with high efficiency and a low carbon footprint. CPI believes that there is an opportunity to address these issues by introducing grid independent power supplies for a range of low power applications based on renewable energies. CPI boasts considerable advanced expertise, experience and technologies for developing various low carbon energy-powered applications. It has also been searching for compact, lightweight, portable DMFCs with high output and generating efficiency to advance the development of applications for an even wider range of fields.

Hitachi has been developing fuels cells since the 1960s and started developing DMFCs in 2001. Hitachi’s prototype DMFCs were developed under the concept of creating power supplies that could be carried in one hand. These prototype DMFCs are compact and lightweight, yet have a high power output density. They are also highly efficient, with a power generation efficiency measured in terms of HHV*1 exceeding 25%.

Hitachi and Hitachi High-Technologies have studied the market for DMFCs for many years. Based on the results of these studies, Hitachi and Hitachi High-Technologies concluded that 100 W-class portable DMFCs are the most suitable products to launch in the early years of the market as they can flexibly and easily respond to user demands. So Hitachi have been working on developing suitable applications.

Framed against this background, the three companies reached today’s agreement because Hitachi’s DMFCs meet CPI’s performance requirements and applications will be developed that meet Hitachi’s and Hitachi High-Technologies’ expectations. Generally speaking, DMFCs are superior to existing independent power supplies such as engine generators in terms of noise levels, vibrations and CO2 emissions. However, many problems related to power output density, cost and longevity must still be overcome. Today’s agreement will see CPI develop applications such as highway signage and portable information systems using Hitachi-made prototype DMFCs. The applications will be tested in laboratories and in the field to assess the overall power generation performance and economic efficiency of DMFCs as the basis for selecting suitable applications. The marketability of the applications and viability of a fuel cell business in the U.K. will also be examined.

HITACHI ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF UK ROLLING STOCK ASSEMBLY AND MANUFACTURING FACILITY

Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT / TSE: 6501, “Hitachi”) today announced plans for the establishment of a rolling stock assembly and manufacturing facility in the UK1, following the announcement that Agility Trains, of which Hitachi is the main shareholder, has been selected as preferred bidder to supply new rolling stock for the Intercity Express Programme.

Hitachi will, in stages, establish assembly and manufacturing operations in the UK that will be operated to support the delivery of the East coast fleet in 2015. The manufacturing facility will initially employ up to 200 staff for more substantive manufacturing, refurbishment and lifetime support for the trains in the UK. Once fully developed, the Hitachi UK manufacturing facility is planned to be capable of the assembly of up to 30 vehicles per month, and employing up to 500 staff, according to market demand, in addition to those involved in maintenance operations.

From feasibility studies to date, a final short-list of three suitable sites, located in Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire, Sheffield and Gateshead in the North East, has been drawn up, with all locations under active consideration. Hitachi is currently conducting more detailed analysis to identify the optimum site location based on a range of assessment criteria.

Established in the UK in 2000, Hitachi Rail Group has won a number of contracts, and has implemented the highly successful Class 395 “Javelin” rolling stock contract and the Class 465 traction replacement programme. Alistair Dormer, General Manager Hitachi Europe Rail Group, said: “Hitachi hopes to contribute to the development of a strong rail industry and infrastructure in the UK through the transfer of high quality Japanese manufacturing processes and skills to the UK and the development of its relations with European suppliers. At the Game Developer Conference, Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced a new version of Adobe® Director® software offering game developers, multimedia authors, and e-learning professionals a host of new features for creating immersive gaming and multimedia applications. With support for a new audio engine, high-definition (HD) video and advanced 3-D features, Adobe Director 11.5 provides a rich and flexible platform to create applications for both online and desktop worlds.

The new features in Director 11.5 include a new audio engine that allows developers to deliver 5.1 channel surround sound and create audio effects using real-time mixing capabilities. Casio Computer Co., Ltd., announced today that it has signed a contract with the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team to serve as a Red Bull Racing Official Partner for the 2009 season. Under the sponsorship agreement, Red Bull Racing will act as brand ambassador for Casio’s Edifice line of analog metal watches for men.
